Tagging and releasing butterflies!

Lexus had the pleasure of tagging and releasing butterflies yesterday. We just went for a drive and got out to see if there were any trails we could walk and we walked into a nature center and they were tagging butterflies so they let us join in on the event. It was way fun! They are trying to get a better look at how the monarch butterfly migrates and where they migrate too. So they put in place this tagging system where they put this little white sticker on the underside of their wings and it has a number, from that number they get where it was tagged and how far it has traveled. It was way cool I didn't know anything like this took place. It was fun because the parents had just as much fun if not more fun than the kids did catching and releasing them. The orange envelope that we put them in to release them has the ID number on it and the web site. We can go online and look to see if anyone has found our butterflies and how far they have gone. It is really interesting. There are so many butterflies in our town right now, they are migrating right now so they are everywhere. They all migrate to Mexico where they live by some volcano's.
